This Novel was originally published in 1932; the date is the importance only in relation to the footnotes, which comment upon the scientific material in the narrative from the standpoint of what was known in the early 30s. The story itself purports to have occurred some 12 years earlier, which would place it between 1919 and 1920. It is presented here as a period piece, and no attempt has been made to update it in any way.
